NZX sneaks out embarassing carbon disclosure after dark

In an announcement sneaked out after market close on Friday 12 February (the day traditionally used by companies to hopefully hide embarrassing and bad news) The New Zealand Stock Exchange Ltd [NZX.NZ] has indicated that it has had to write down the value of a "performance payment" from the sale of its carbon registry, TZ1 last year.

Curiously the NZX valued this payment at $ US 37.1 million (seems quite arbitrary considering there is no set "value" for a "carbon credit") but have now decided to write this down to another arbitrary figure of US$21.4 million.

So, the NZX have been winners and losers in the carbon credit lark. They sold to some poor sucker at the height of the scam and lost out by missing on a performance bonus.

An interesting finish to the NZX release today:

In spite of tough operating conditions, the TZ1 registry business continues to lead the field in customer acquisition worldwide. As such it is very well-placed to benefit when the carbon agenda, and corporate willingness to commit voluntary spend in this field, return. The past 12 months was a planned, intensive growth phase for the carbon registry business, and that growth has been slowed by macro headwinds. NZX remains confident around the long-term success of the this business.

They admit that the carbon trading business is an "agenda", it is indeed one of those, a political one used by people like the folk at NZX to make money from thin air but they say they are also confident that the business will be a long-term winner.

I would have to argue again that this statement seems a little confusing because they sold TZ1 in the first place and it also looks to be collapsing into itself in a heap of smelly shareholder losing red ink on the NZX balance sheet.

I have to say, in terms of disclosure by the NZX and Mark Weldon, to be this sneaky about releasing this information, it sets a very poor example for the listed companies that it manages on behalf of shareholders and goes to show when you mess with an "investment" that is based on fraud and when you don't understand that investment, you can quickly come unraveled.

NZX shareholders are the big losers here and there will be more losses to come as carbon trading continues to unravel.

Mark Weldon now in two minds about Carbon Trading

The announcement last week by Mark Weldon, CEO of the NZX, that they are going to sell their flash new carbon trading registry business TZ1 Registry to Markit, a global financial information services company, leaves the financial world more than just a little perplexed.

Mark has been banging on about his registry and how much potential for business and I guess profit that this new registry will have.

Then why sell the golden goose?

That is where Weldon either becomes the cleverest man in the world for flogging off this dead horse to a poor sucker, in this case Markit, or the biggest hypocrite New Zealand business has ever seen for turning his back on a growth opportunity akin to the second coming of the tulip bulb craze of the 1600s.

Most sensible people know that this carbon trading lark is based on a lie and eventually it will all come crashing down on itself and that is where Mark becomes a clever little bastard-ditching a no-hoper before it becomes a worthless millstone .

Payment will be made in Markit shares, currently worth around $NZ 60 million, so unfortunately this exposes the NZX to losses further down the line when carbon trading fails.

Lets hope Mark will be smart enough to see that coming and jump ship before that happens.

Mark Weldon's hypocrisy is clearly evident because he has fully backed this TZ1 carbon trading venture with all the rhetoric, pomp and circumstance and the so-called "science" that backs it up and is now leaving the registry services part of it behind.

NZX is left with the relatively insignificant TZ1 carbon trading division.

Prospective and current investors in the New Zealand Stock Exchange [NZX.NZ] will be left wondering, does Mark Weldon believe in the carbon trading business or is he just taking advantage of the ignorant and blind?

Lets hope it is the latter.

"...creating product that is impossible to comprehend..."

Mark Weldon-Newstalk ZB , 17 Sept 2008

Mark was talking about the current market turmoil and some of the dodgy financial instruments that have led to its current shake-up.

Unfortunately for us though Mark and his NZX are putting together financial products that are even harder to comprehend than sub-prime related instruments.

He is helping develop a carbon trading platform that will make the current mess look like a walk in Central Park, during daylight hours.

Fraudulent Emissions Trading Bill

The most contentious, dangerous and economically disastrous legislation in New Zealand's history is set to be rammed through by the Labour Party and its lapdog support parties over the next two weeks.

Carbon Credit trading puts global markets at extreme risk

Originally posted at my Share Investor Blog this piece is also a highly political one, and in an Election year voters need to be wary of our political masters and their views on the new global warming religion.

The New Zealand Labour party passed a law at the end of 2007 to allow the trading of "carbon credits" in 2008 and the legitimacy that it sees this trading give their lunatic stance on "global warming" will give them ample cause to bring even more new taxes in 2008 to "lessen the impact of our carbon footprints" and therefore have even more control over New Zealanders.

Man made "global warming" is a myth and it is a means used by politicians to suck your pocket drier than a dust storm in the Saudi desert on a 60 degree day in the full sun.

Nothing more.

Carbon Credit trading puts global markets at extreme risk

From Share Investor Blog

I'm going to kick 2008 off with a topic that is going to be a constant of mine this year, and in the years to come, because as far as economics, the impact on economies and business, it is going to be one of the biggest negatives we have ever faced.

The scourge of the global warming Nazis and their thirst for control, of individuals and nations, through new and increased taxes, in the name of decreasing your "carbon footprint", is going to have far reaching impacts into every aspect of everyday life.

The relevance of this to investing and my interest comes in the form of "carbon trading".

The introduction of a so-called "Carbon Trading" platform by New Zealand's NZX is likely to be the beginning of the end for this country's economy and global economies as we know them and there is a possibility that our sharemarket could be wiped off the face of the earth completely when the carbon trading market inevitably collapses.

Scaremongering and overstating my case to make a point?

I think not.

If we learn anything from history in regards to booms and busts and meaningless frenzies whipped up by market hysteria, we have only to look back to the most recent tech bust of 2000, where there was at least some substance and truth and real profit involved in a handful of tech companies, some of which still survive today.

We can also look back to the Dutch poppy boom around 400 years ago, where "rare" blooms were being traded for outrageous prices, well beyond any intrinsic value and of course just like the tech boom 400 years latter, much wealth was made by those that got in first but eventually things turned pear shaped, and most people lost, collectively, vast sums of money.

If we look at the carbon trading market, one can see the beginnings of a frenzy, one being whipped up by the likes of Al Gore, Hollywood and theorists who base their whole "global warming" theory on failed "science" and outright lies.

Al Gore is one of the leading proponents of carbon credit trading and has a huge financial interest in that market.

These early adopters are set to make billions on carbon trading markets and will be the only ones to profit from it.

The outfall when the latter come investors lose faith from trading "carbon credits", which they will because they are not only worth zero in dollar terms, but are a negative weight on economies and have no intrinsic value in themselves, will cause a crash in multiple markets not seen since 1929 and the 2000 tech plunge.

The trading of good stocks, property, land, businesses, minerals, commodities and the like, that have an actual value, and clearly while the prices of these assets will fluctuate in price, most provide a real income and have value. Carbon credits, which are and will be traded increasingly in the future, have no actual value if you don't believe the flawed concept on which they are actually based.

As most critical thinkers know, the concept of man made "global warming", the basis for it and the reasons it is being raised as a concept or theory, is a highly contentious one and the trading of carbon credits, in order to make money for the savvy, gives it a respectability it really doesn't deserve.

Just like the poppy rush of the 1600s, the great crash of 1929, the market meltdown in1987 and the tech bust in 2000, the coming carbon credit trading bust shares some of the reasons why markets crashed at these times.

These four market crashes all share an over exuberance and a market frenzy to a point where the value of the assets or shares traded far exceeded their real intrinsic value and these were the main reasons why the markets eventually collapsed.

The poppy trading, tech market boom and carbon credit trading share a similar trait in themselves.

In all three cases the values placed on "goods" traded often had no or little value from the get go.

Poppies traded 400 years ago were wildly inflated in price, the majority of tech company stocks traded had never made a profit, and in the carbon credit trading example not only does the "product" traded have no real value, it is actually of negative value, in a local and global business sense because it adds cost to running a business and will eventually be applied to every product and service that consumers buy and use on a daily basis.

From a carbon tax on gas at the pump, to food you buy in the supermarket, the new carbon taxes will be applied to everything and clearly it will cost us all more, all for no good reason, for that is what taxes do, they constrain business and economies.

So clearly the carbon credit trading part of the equation means you can offset those extra taxes forced on us by the global warming Nazis but the negative value of those so called carbon credits is self evident from my explanation that they are a cost not a productive commodity that is worth anything.

They are worth less than nothing!!!

Politicians and business "leaders" who have jumped on the carbon credit bandwagon, because they can see the dollars to be made and the control of the populace that extra taxes afford, are putting the global economy under threat. Ironic then that this is being led by a failed politician, Al Gore.

The past has left us littered with evidence that getting caught up in such bandwagons only leads to disaster.

To ignore the warning signs of history is to go forward blindfolded, deaf and with ones mouth shut and is clearly moronic to the ultimate degree.

In writing this piece I am constantly reminded by the old adage "...when one ignores history one is bound to repeat the same mistakes..." but we know what has passed and it is more like, "... repeating the same thing over and over and expecting a different result".

Either way the global economy is in for a huge shock when the carbon credit market implodes.

Resist the temptation to get involved this time.

Share Investor Friday free for all: Edition 12

Fat Prophets

There have been some good company results out this week. Ryman Healthcare had a 20% rise in profit for the last half year and forecast another strong year in 2008, while Fisher and Paykel Health half year profit was down sharply because of repatriated funds in US dollars lower due to the weak US currency but sales and profitability before currency exchange were up strongly.

http://www.headliner.co.nz/images/Ryman_Healthcare.jpg
Part of a Ryman Healthcare Village

Earlier this week, Mainfreight half year profit rose around 9% before abnormals and future guidance gave investors positive encouragement for their investment in the company.

OK, OK, so I'm blowing my own trumpet because I own shares in all these companies? Well, Yes and No.

While individually these 3 companies are doing well, with rising sales, profits and good future profits indicated, as a group they show that New Zealand listed companies are still doing well, despite all the international drama of market turmoil, rising oil, mineral, commodity prices and Al Gore putting his carbon footprint in his mouth again.

Investing long term in good companies always beats the likes of trading carbon fairy dust!

I'll be baackk

The Loan Terminator, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, is back in the news again this week, in a sequel to his Terminator movies that would have him eliminate Californian home loan debtors the pain of repaying their sub prime mortgages at normal interest rates by making the sweetheart deals they initially signed up for extend for a period of up to seven years.

http://img.timeinc.net/time/2007/villains/images/schwarz_land_page.jpg
The Governator terminates debt while
looking cool at the same time.

The bulk of these "sweetheart" deals at very low interest rates were due to be recalculated in several months time but 3 lending institutions who have exposure to 25% of sub prime loans, Countrywide Financial Corp, GMAC, Litton Loan Servicing and HomEq Servicing, seem to have convinced Arnie that eliminating the inevitable collapse of borrowers next year and putting it off till 2014 is a great idea.

As I have ranted on before, these individuals, as sad as it is, simply need to bite the bullet and face the music now, instead of slowly dragging down the rest of us with them.

Arnie needs to go back to Hollywood and fight the bad guys not Terminate borrowers' and lenders' responsibilities to face their own debt woes.

Terminator 4 anyone?

The carbon fairy has no clothes on

In what is clearly gearing up to be one of history's greatest financial explosions and implosion when it all inevitably collapses, is news today that the carbon trading "market" tripled in size to US$30 Billion last year.

With this market built on failed "science", lies and spruiking by the likes of wealthy green investors Al Gore and Leonardo Di Caprio, like all markets built on such flimsy backgrounds the money made, and there will be billions, will be made by those that get on the greenwagon first:

Since co-founding Climate Change Capital in 2003, James Cameron and his business partner Mark Woodall have turned their company into a powerhouse in the burgeoning global market in greenhouse gases. Driven by the Kyoto Protocol on global warming, an accord Cameron helped write, this corner of the derivatives arena is growing as never before.

Clearly, Cameron and Woodall are smart cookies but these self interested scam artists, who have written their own rules and now profit from them by "investing" other peoples hard earned cash into worthless carbon credits will be the first to withdraw their own funds when the climate change hysteria is revealed for what it is, that the sun simply getting hotter.

A Carbon footprint recently traded on Ebay for
US$1 Million.

I am old enough to remember similar things happening during the dot com era where mum and dad investors piled into worthless "businesses" and the big boys got out first before the truth about the bulk of silicon valley Internet companies hit the investment fan.

The same thing is going to happen with the carbon trading market.

Fletcher Building's got game

http://media.apn.co.nz/webcontent/image/gif/012edednpark.gif
Artist impression of the new Eden Park

In a provisional decision, it has been announced today that Fletcher Building has been picked as the preferred builder for the new Eden Park revamp, valued at anywhere between NZ$190 million and north of $300 million, depending on who you speak to.

The stadium is to be rebuilt for the 2011 Rugby World Cup and construction is expected to start in August 2008.

If Fletcher's can negotiate a good deal for them, it is going to be good for the company. I'm mindful though that many stadiums built around the world have caused construction companies much grief, as changes to design, construction problems, and political meddling has put profits at stake and even put company futures at risk.

The new Wembly Stadium almost sunk the Australian builder Multiplex last year and the company building the new Vector Arena in Downtown Auckland lost big dollars on that project.

Grab your seat for the game, Fletchers could be in for a bumpy ride.

NZX Market Wrap

The benchmark NZSX-50 index, which yesterday ended below where it started the year, close up 16.8 points on 4071.0.

Turnover was light at $71 million.

"The over-riding theme was one of extreme caution," said ABN Amro broker Matt Willis. While value was starting to emerge, there was no rush to buy. Investors remained risk averse due to the US subprime mortgage crisis, which he said was a bi-product of weakening economy.

On the local scene, results of export stocks this week revealed the lagged impact of the high dollar was starting to hurt as currency hedges ran out. Companies were concerned about higher costs.

"Operating conditions are less than positive and that has followed through into sentiment."

However, retirement village operator Ryman Healthcare picked up 2c to 207 after reporting a 22 per cent lift in half year net profit after tax to $34.7 million.

No.2 stock Fletcher Building pared its morning loss to 5c, ending on 1175, after it was confirmed as the prime contractor to revamp Eden Park.

No.3 Contact Energy finished 4c up on 889.

NZ Oil & Gas eased back 2c to 110, having traded up to 113 in the morning, after gaining 11c yesterday on news estimated oil reserves for the Tui field had increased 30 per cent to 41.7 million barrels. That was worth an extra $200 million to NZOG, over time.

Sky City ended unchanged on 518 with possible bidders expected to show their hands early next week. However, share action suggests the market does not hold high hope for high offers.

Australian stocks mostly had a good session despite uncertainty surrounding tomorrow's election result.

Lion Nathan, which on Wednesday reported a strong result with good prospects for 2008, closed up 60 at 1100.

Goodman Fielder recovered some of its recent losses with a 9c gain to 230.
